About NanoLipoMedics
High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) nanoparticles are increasingly being engineered for targeted delivery of cancer drugs. However, there is a dire need for HDL nanoparticles that target specific tumors while minimizing toxic side effects. Strategies for cancer treatment are complicated by a broad variety of factors, including the infected cell type, genetics, tumor size, metastatic stage, and the underlying cell division mechanism. NanoLipoMedics is tuning HDL particles to facilitate less toxic drug delivery customized to each unique cancer patient.
HDL targeting is facilitated by its binding to the scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1), which is overexpressed in lung, breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers, among others. Chemical processes in the body drive modulation of certain cellular functions, and have been used to modify HDL experimentally. Drug delivery vehicles have been self-assembled from lipids and apolipoproteins to produce reconstituted HDL (rHDL) for targeted drug delivery to cancer cells. NanoLipoMedics is tuning rHDL delivery vehicles for optimal specificity of anticancer payloads.
